- "Music was always what I wanted to do," says Mariah Carey,
- 20. Imitating singers she heard on the radio, the little girl
- with the great big voice captivated visitors to her New York
- City home. With coaching from her opera-singer mother, she
- developed a powerhouse style, soaring from a low growl to an
- ethereal wail. Now her full five octaves can be heard on an
- album titled simply Mariah Carey, released last week. How did
- she come by the unusual first name? Her mom thought it sounded
- good for the stage and, jokes Carey, she "had a plan." It
- worked.
